For many people,Canada Archives finding oneself with nothing to wear the night before a big event is -- to put it mildly -- upsetting. For teen designer Shami Oshun, it was just an excuse to make something cool.
The San Francisco designer spent a grand total of $15 to create her homemade prom dress, which she documented on Twitter last weekend. The result is strikingly beautiful, well-made, unique, and on-theme for the event: which is more than can be said about many Met Gala looks.

To make the dress, Oshun added details -- including fabric, gems, and rosettes from other dresses -- to a plain white dress she already had in her closet. She wasn't afraid to start over and change direction, either -- the mark of a true artiste.
